Welcome to the Bay Area Recreational Flyers Web Site
We are EAA Ultralight Chapter 123, covering a large area in Houston and the East Texas area. Our members are primarily Powered Parachute flyers, but we welcome all pilots to our Chapter. Our membership is large and growing plus we have many flying friends across the country. Monthly meetings are held the third Saturday of each month in the Hughes Aero hangar at the Wharton Airport.
Please enjoy the web site and contact our officers if you have any questions. If you would like to join, our club dues are only $20 per year. Since we are an EAA chapter, joining the national EAA organization is a prerequisite for a voting membership in our club.
Most of the gang arrived on Thursday afternoon; after getting everyone parked the winds were up so we decided to get dinner going and just as we started to eat the winds layed down. We decided to get up early Friday morning and go for it, however the winds picked back up during the night and it was kicking about 30 mph in the am. Thanks to all the women for a great breakfast, biscuits and sausage gravy. The rest of the day was occupied by going into town, shopping and waiting for the winds to subside. Once again later in the evening just before sundown the winds begin to calm and we fed our faces rather than fly.
A special thanks to Carolyn, Anita, Sharon, Corinne, Joanne and Carol for the work they did with breakfasts, afternoon munchies, side dishes, deserts, setting up and cleaning up after the meals. Kirk and Aric also contributed with Chile and home made ice cream yum, yum!
Craig McPherson came over for a visit as he lives in the local area and is a powered parachute CFI. He and a couple of his students were eager to fly with us and as always we welcomed their visit. We also enjoyed having Larry and Joanne Devuyst who have a game ranch in Lometa TX., Frank and Sharon from Arlington, Steve Dawson, Tony Anderson the 1999 Flat Bottom Boat Racer of the year and Teresa and Mike our daughter and son in law. Just goes to show you there are a lot folks out there who love our sport and fly powered parachutes.
Saturday morning was met with early wake up and engines roaring toward the runway, Jim Howard was the first to get airborne followed by several others, I think we counted eight planes in the air at one time. Most all flew twice on Saturday and toward the evening the winds picked back up again but a least we got some good flying in during the day. Prior to our flight we heard that Scott was called in for a dual lung transplant. He and Lisa were in our thoughts and prayers and we were glad to hear that all went well. We wish him a speedy recovery!
Sunday was met with overcast skies and low ceiling, but as the fog lifted, engines stated running and again the sky was buzzing with chutes.
The park ranger/police man Clinton Kern was a great host and watched over us for varying reasons...all good. Larry took him up on Sunday and did he have a smile on his face after landing. He saw parts of the park he had never seen before. He welcomed us to come back at any time.
In all we had 13 folks camping, several visitors, and 8 planes flying. I think all in all everyone enjoyed themselves and had a great fly-in. We appreciate the distances some had to travel, but hopefully they feel it was worth it. The club may want to consider adding Lake Whitney to their annual calendar for places to fly!
The weather was hot, very dry and windy at Jim Howard’s game ranch in Edinburg, TX. We noticed that the rest of Texas was also having windy weather. Aric Carkenord did fly about ten minutes, flying East at five mph and flying West at fifty five mph. We watched Aric and decided not to test our flying skills.
Up to 20 people showed up around meal times, for Jim’s grilled hamburgers, or his forty pounds of mesquite grilled chicken quarters.Lynn Comparetto exhibited her expert skills on warming tamales in a frying pan. Anita Howard also had an 18 pound ham ready for more meals. Robert Rodriguez has joined our chapter.Robert and his friend Marcos volunteered to go for tamales. The group pitched in and they returned with twelve dozen mixed batches of tamales. The cream cheese with chicken were the most popular tamales.Robert also grilled chicken and onions. Jim and Anita’s son-in-law Thomas, donated three, one hundred pound sacks of 10-15 onions. The breakfasts with eggs, ham, tamales werea big hit with everyone. Kirk and Aric supplied 8 pounds of boiled jumbo shrimp. Aric’s Home-made icecream helped cool us down and when mixed with Corinne’s chocolate earthquake cake or her banana pudding, it was a real treat. Steve Austin flew in from working in South Padre Island and had a BigScreen projector for the Saturday night showing of Ironman. Jim and Anita’s daughter Shelly, stopped by in her Border Patrol uniform, with a big gun. Some ran, but the rest of us just surrendered. Jim handed out T- Shirts with the quote, “I‘d Rather Be Flying at the South Texas (Omni)Game Ranch”. As you can tell, we didn’t fly much, but we all had a great time. Jim and Anita are great hosts and wish many more of their flying friends could visit with them and enjoy the wild animals (pets), on the ranch.
Unfortunately the Wilson dynasty has come to an end with the last BARF meeting and Christmas party. Don’t worry; Ken has been selected to manage the biggest event of the year, the World PPC Championship to be held at Wharton, Texas October 15 – 19th. Ken, Carolyn, Waldo and Mike have done an outstanding job for the past three years. The membership has tripled and classes, training and tests were provided for all members to make the big transition from BFI to Sport Pilot with an Inspection Rating. Thanks also to Scott, Lisa, Gunny, Janie and Teddy for allowing us to invade the hangar monthly for the BARF meetings.
Another great BARF Christmas Party was held at Baytown Seafood, which provided us with the big room, and “Mom, her daughter and cousin “to serve the thirty-seven merry makers.Brent and Teryl Scott started the party by handing out original and official Continental Airlines “BARF” bags, filled with goodies. The food was great and soon the start of the gift stealing began. Carolyn Wilson drew number one, and Lisa Hughes drew number thirty- seven.I think Lynn ended up with the night’s hottest gift, ask her about them. Corinne cornered the nice humming bird feeder and Henry James had the most gifts stolen. I lost count at seven. Everyone participated including the owners and staff of Baytown Seafood.
Well, it’s going to take more than a village to replace Ken, so I’m requesting that members come forward and volunteer to serve on one or more of the following committees: Meals, Setup/Cleanup, Events, Safety/Rules, Membership, and Newsletter. It has been suggested that if we have twelve volunteers to provide a monthly after meeting lunch, the burden would be much easier on everyone. The meals committee and other members would provide help and support for the monthly meals. Please consider signing up for one or more of the committees to support the largest and BEST PPC club in the EAA.

Wow, what a great time @ Jim's place. Good Friends, Good weather,
Good God, what more could you ask for? Jim might ask for a new rib or
two. I went to Mexico for the first time & had a good time. As always,
it was great to see everyone. Now that Thanksgiving is over, I can be
the first to say Merry Christmas to all & to all a good night!
Fletch & Connie
Hello all - just wanted to take a second and thank all those who
attended the fly-in (Beeville-Butthead Chute Out) in Wharton this past
weekend. The weather was fantastic and the flying great. Everyone
enjoyed the competition on Sat. afternoon and I was very impressed
with the flying attitudes of all the pilots, eager to learn and
showing their responsibity to fly the craft first and make sound
judgements -- way to go. The "fans" really enjoyed the show. The
Halloween Party was great with so many dressing up and enjoying
themselves and we all know that enough cannot be said about the all
famous "I Believe" hay ride --always fun. We are all very fortunate to
be able to get together and enjoy our friendships the way we do at
these fly-ins. Thanks again to all and will look forward to the Turkey
Trot @ Jim's place. Light winds and blue skies.

BARF Flyers:
We had picked a date for the world championship this year. However, with Fredrick’s move to Texas the time has proven to be just too short to get everything coordinated properly. We do appreciate how many pilot’s have said they would have come and all of the help that our local BARF group (EAA 123) had pledged.
With that being said, let us officially announce the World Championship for 2009. The event date is October 15th thru the 18th, 2009. It will be held at the Wharton Regional Airport (KARM) just about 60miles SW of Houston, TX.
We will keep you informed on our progress. Fredrick should have the rules & process for this awesome 2009 Championship competition posted in just a month or so. We will begin working on sponsors/vendors and accepting competitors in December and January. We are very excited about some of the companies and people that are expressing a strong interest in supporting the event.
As a footnote, ALL vendors and organizations inquiries are welcomed. With all of that being said we will be looking for any ideas, suggestions and volunteers that will help to make this one the biggest and the best Flyin/competitions ever. Also if you would like to be included on a strictly Championship email newsletter about the event, please just let us know as well.
We are hoping that this is enough time to throw down the gauntlet to the Aussie, Chinese and our Israeli friends. And who knows, maybe we will meet some new ones from abroad.
What a weekend. Living in Houston we usually get real hot in May and the winds are real hit and miss and the humidity is way up there. Well this BARF weekend proved to be a 10. The weather was 75 degree’s with low winds and low humidity. One of those Fly all day DAY’s. I think global cooling is in full effect. (When are our politicians going to do something about global cooling). Anyway it was fun to see all the planes up and people enjoying the air. It was unusual seeing people on the ground and not flying at sunset because they were flown out. How often does that happen?
Many of the BARF gang are doing a cruise next week. A bunch are going down to South Padre Island, TX. All in all there was a lot to talk about. We talked about the need for some of our group to start thinking about getting their BFR’s and what is entailed. It was a good meeting. Saturday night Corinne cooked the biggest dam burgers and I think every the dogs were stuffed. With the full moon Saturday night the “Circle of Love” was strong. You will just have to come to a meeting to understand what the heck the “Circle of Love is”.
2nd Annual Leakey, TX Powered Parachute Spring Rodeo Roundup
We had a very good time at the BARF Leakey, TX fly-In. 19 PPCs, 1
Trike and 3 GAs invited from Hondo were at 49R. All the Lodging and RV
spots were full and dry campers parked around the RV area. Rick
Cauble's pictures reveal what a fun time we had flying and
socializing. "El Presidente" along with Sam and Effi Kellner (property
managers), worked hard to ensure everyone had a great time. Two cold
fronts came through, but the flying Friday and Saturday was great.
Sunday morning early was calm, but the second front blew in and the
PPC's landed ASAP. Carl Debarbieris stayed over Monday to fly and
ride his motorcycle on the "three sisters" roads. He said it was a ten
Monday morning. A Big thanks to everyone for helping make this a fun
event. Your help was very much appreciated. Rick Cauble's "Texas Flag"
bandannas sold out.
When not flying, Kirk and Aric Carkenord stayed busy work on
everything from my trailer lights, to 4 PPCs and Jim Howard's
satellite TV system. Louis Girard also helped repairing PPCs, ground
crewing and taking pictures. Jim Howard had fun harassing everyone and
making loud verbal notes on everyone's flying skills or lack thereof.
The little kids were threatening to throw rocks at his toy hauler, so
Jim gave them a slight break.
I don't have pictures of the meals, but each meal was outstanding.
Thursday night was grilled hamburgers and Friday's was fried catfish,
provided by Wayne and Carol Powell. Saturday was "hobo stew" with
ingredients from everyone. Ken and Carolyn served pancakes and bacon
on Saturday. Sunday morning, the Powell's served breakfast tacos. Leon
Murphy and Ken Wilson did the lion's share of the grilling and
cooking, with advice from Carolyn and Susan. Margo Henderson's bacon
wrapped pecan stuffed dates lasted about 10 minutes, and would have
been gone sooner if not for her Guacamole. Susan's buttermilk pie was
a hit, along with Margo's upside down pineapple cake. Rick Cauble
provided a strawberry cake to celebrate Elaine's birthday. Everyone
pitched in and provided mid-afternoon snacks. Jim's gums were sore
after attacking Regina Perkin's sweet corn on the cob. He did leave
some for the rest of the group.
The 40 plus people attending this event flew and socialized together
and made the event such an enjoyable time, I'm sure many more will
want to attend next time at Leakey or any of the BARF fly-Ins. Thanks
again to President Ken and Carolyn Wilson for making this a huge
success. This is all my failing memory recalls, so don't feel bad if
I didn't mention everyone and everything. Link to Rick's pictures.
This year to show many pictures without filling up our web site, I’m trying Picasa to see how it will meet our needs to allow all members access to many pictures. Members should be able to add pictures to those posted. This is the first time using this product, so it’s trial and error as I learn. The following link
(double click on the picture shown to view all pictures).
brings up the pictures I’ve uploaded and allow members to upload more. If we need more storage gigs, it’s available at a reasonable price. I hope this meet our needs in passing along the fun things BARF members are doing. Please advise me of any problems.

GREAT TURNOUT FOR THE FLY-IN AT JIM HOWARD’S RANCH IN EDINBURG
If you like flying with friends, feeding exotic animals, 1923 Model T rides, eating chili, brisket, smoked turkey, lasagna, fresh Valley fruit, homemade ice cream and more, then you should have been at Jim Howard’s Fly-In. About 30 people did show up and a happy group with a chauffeur took Jim’s limousine to Mexico. They all really had fun, except Regina Perkins, whose passport had expired. The Customs officials wanted to keep her for awhile, but decided to search the limo instead. They all came back to join the ongoing activities.
Steve and Kelly Austin, Scott and Lisa Hughes flew in to KEBG for Saturday and Sunday activities. Kelly loved the one mile walking path, but being licked and slimed by grapefruit eating buffalo was a new experience. 1923 Model T rides in Mom’s car, with Aric Corkenord driving, while Kirk supervised, were a real treat. The Corkenords also provided the chili and two tubs of homemade ice cream. The toyhauler food was outstanding.
Oh yes, everyone flew either in the morning or evening. When the winds did pick up unexpectedly, the volunteer ground crews helped collect and pack chutes. This help is why the BARF people are such a great group. Ken Wilson and Leon Murphy presented Jim with an exotic bird that will replace the ones he lost and this one will not fly away. Anita’s quiche provided a nice send off Sunday morning, but many wanted to stay. Jim invited everyone back any time. Thanks again, Jim, Anita, Kirk and Aric for a great time.
A fun time was had by all at the BARF Christmas party on the 15th. The party was held at the Bay Town Sea food restaurant in Wharton. This year the restaurant owner and staff joined in the gift exchange. This exchange involved selecting a gift and the next person could select a new gift or steal a previous selected gift. A gift could only be stolen three times. Next year new rules will include 1. No hiding gifts under the table and 2. Marking a gift each time it is stolen. About fifty people enjoyed the party and are looking forward to next year’s even bigger party. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Ron Perkins wins at Turkey Trot
Yes, Ron Perkins won the prize bird by flying Wednesday the 21st at Matagorda Bay. Wind, cold and rain wiped out Flying over the Thanksgiving weekend. BARF members that did venture out, stayed around the Hughes Aero hanger In Wharton. Well, we always have next year and it might be a sunny weekend. See you at the 2008 TT.
If you are looking for something fun for the whole family this weekend, then check out this special event at the Orange County Airport. Today, Saturday and Sunday, a group of ultra-light aircraft pilots will give a special “fly-in” demonstration of their aircraft right here in Orange County. According to Gordon Buffington of Fannett, this is something he hopes can become a yearly event at the airport.
“A lot of people may not be familiar with the name, but basically what we are flying are powered parachutes,” Buffington said. “It’s the only aircraft you can still control and land if the engine quits, but they can’t stand anything like high winds over 9 miles per hour.”
Buffington said he expects 15 to 20 people from as far as Houston and Baton Rouge to participate in this weekend’s event. Buffington also said if enough people arrive early Friday, then some pilots could begin flying Friday afternoon between 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event will continue throughout the day Saturday and much of the day on Sunday.
“These are very people friendly aircraft,” Buffington said. “The public can really get up close and see the aircraft and talk to the people who fly them.” Buffington no longer flies aircraft. He lost two close friends in separate airplane crashes within a 60 day span and decided it was time to sit back and enjoy life.
“I spend a lot of time driving around in my 1939 Chevy,” Buffington said with a laugh. “It’s the same age as me, but we still get around.” Buffington’s love of classic and antique vehicles is also part of this weekend’s activities, as a handful of antique cars could be on display at the airport Saturday.
“This is something we hope will become an annual event at the airport,” he said. “This could be a really unique blend of activities with the cars and the aircraft. And, best of all, it’s all free to the public.”
Buffington said the event is being held mainly to expose people in Orange County, and the surrounding communities, to the sport and “just to have a good time.” “The pilots will fly all day if the weather is good,” he said. “But if it rains, then everything will be canceled. It’s just part of the process we have to deal with.”
The Orange County Airport is located on State Highway 87 between State Highway 62 near Bridge City and FM 105 near Orange.
1st ANNUAL 2007 ORANGE, TX FLY-IN
Tom Foreman, Gordon Buffington and Sonny Ledoux hosted a fun fly-in at the Orange County Airport in Orange, TX. Tom Foreman the airport manager runs a very nice facility and we really enjoyed being invited to fly at this airport.
Saturday morning was foggy. After the fog lifted, 10 or more PPC’s were up and flying. When the local news crew arrived, the PPC’s took to the sky. Ken Wilson, Sonny Ledoux and Gordon Buffington. made the 6 and 10 pm news. A little gyrocopter also flew around for a while. Ken and Carolyn provided lunch and Gordon’s grilled sausages were hot, spicy and great for supper. Sunday morning it was windy and raining. Sonny’s breakfast tacos fed a hungry bunch and got us started for “show and tell” with the general public stopping at the airport. The wind stayed up and after lunch we packed up and headed home.
Thanks again, Tom, Gordon and Sonny for a fun Fly-In.

Ballunar Fest 2007
What a great weekend for Ballunar Fest. The winds hindered the balloons a little, but everyone had a great time watching the balloons, skydivers, rockets and of course fly-bys by PPCs and some RV-7s. Scott, Phil, Frank, Garrett, myself and Sonny had fun flying and wavering to the spectators. Many people want to drive or buy the funny looking go-carts and of course we all tried to sell them one.
Just a quick note let everyone know we had a great time flying, competing and meeting new and old friends from the PPC Community.
Hurricane, Utah is named for strong dust storms and one storm made me a believer. More stories and pictures will be posted as attendees have a chance to recover and begin telling stories.
Scott finished 5th and I know next year BARF members will practice and be ready for the challenge. See you at the next fly-In or meeting.

H Hello all ---- what a great time we had..I wanted to take a minute and
thank all those that came to the fly-in..The friendship and meeting of
new pilots is always so welcomed. The flying was okay, but not quite
what the "weather person" had said it would be but it sure made for
some interesting landings and great pilot control..everyone did very
well w/out incident at any time..The cross country was "eventful" and I
had no idea a ppc could reach that kind of speed!! The Halloween party
was great but the famous hayride or otherwise known as "I Believe" was
fantastic..WE (myself, Fletch, Neisy and Connie)truly are greatful for
your friendship and the good times that you bring..thank you for
attending and AS always ---- light winds and blue skies..
Rick
P.S. as anyone really seen "MOM"...thanks to the brothers for the
wonderful roadkill chili..it really was delish!!
Rick
What a great place to fly and have fun! With about 12 ppc’s and a couple of ppg’s, who could ask for anything more. Many thanks to Chip Anderson for hosting and also to the owner, Anna ? and her mother for having us. They really rolled out the carpet for us. Those pilots that were there, flew on Friday morning and evening. Saturday’s cross country had to be cancelled due to inclement (not so great) weather (fog and rain). However, later in the day, some of the crew hung around the hangars fine tuning their aircraft and the rest went exploring in Comfort and Fredricksburg. Sunday morning brought more flying in better conditions.
Everyone had a great time in Comfort this weekend. The weather didn't cooperate much with only a small window of time to fly and several did! We're invited back next year. Till later, Rick Cauble
What a great weekend (meeting) we had at BARF with our friends. We had over 70 folks come and go Saturday.
Amy Wales and Chuck Willey made it back down to help BARF club members N number their planes and get sport piloted. I think they "N" numbered 16+ total and I am not sure about SP they did. Just a friendly reminder to our group... we still have well over 20 pilots that I know of that haven't made the transition to sport pilot and we figure around 30+ that haven't "N" numbered their planes in the area. Time is running out but it can all still be easily done. Be sure to send your paperwork off and get your hard card in hand.
Amy and Chuck say they are probably coming back and I think Fredrick and Roy Boy are coming down before the transition is over. My hats off to El Presidentae Ken and Carolynn Wilson who have single handedly taken the Sport Pilot transition by the horns and made our club probably the highest percentage of Sport Pilots in the country. We are so lucky to have them.
We had 4 beautiful days of flying over the weekend. Everyone took advantage of it. We flew the Colorado River (TX), Alligator Lake (Nudist Colony) and also a flight the Flying V Ranch flyin. Flying V Ranch is where they build and rebuild Stearman's. I think everyone got just about all the flying they wanted. This weekend is why I got into powered parachuting... great flying, great friends, great fun and great memories.
Next month 30+ of us are starting the caravan to Utah and Fredrick's flyin. If anyone what's to join up just give us a holler. I talked to Fredrick and with the numbers that have already signed up and those that we know are about we think he will be well over 100+ which makes him, "Color Country" the largest flyin anywhere. Way to go Fredrick.
I also found out we are going to have the premier of our Pilot for TV on the Monday night of the flyin. I can't wait to see it. I was hoping to have our SLSA Predator for the Flyin but I need to do a couple of more pull test and signoffs to complete the process. So we will probably wait until December for the big splash. The reason for waiting is because of all of the flyins we have in October and November.
WOW, what a great time at the Anahuac Gatorfest. Ron Jackson was a great host to the large group of PPC flyers who arrived at the airport (T00) for a fun event. Ron and crew provided a pancake breakfast and a great Bar-B-Q for a noon meal. Thanks again to Ron for having us.
We had 15 ppc flying with 1 GA (SA) and over 40 people in our group. The weather was hot, but a cool wind left over from hurricane Humberto helped keep the temperatures down a little. Almost everyone visited the Gatorfest and the biggest Gator caught at the time was 11’9” long. Ken Wilson and helpers provided a Saturday night meal to top off a full day of fun and flying.
Hear more about this event at the BARF meeting September 22nd at 11am. Don’t forget the fly-in at the flying V ranch. A group flying to the Flying V ranch is in the planning.
We hear BARF members had a great time at the Alpine Balloon Bash. Below are some of Rick Cauble’s pictures of this fun event. More details as the members return home.
Carolyn Willson wrote:
For all of you who missed the Alpine Balloon Bash, it was a great fly-in. We got to fly every morning and one evening. Was really neat to watch the balloons inflate and lift off from above them.
Jim Howard was flying the white and blue plane with the American flag chute. The organizers saw us flying on Friday and asked him to fly the flag during the National Anthem each morning. He did a great job and wowed the crowd.
Waldo and Linda Sebesta invited BARF members to drop-in and cool off in the pool, plus have some adult refreshments. The weather was unstable, so flying gave way to
refreshments, food and swimming. Bill and Vanessa really helped out by cooking bacon and French toast for breakfast, then grilling hotdogs for lunch. We talked about ppcs
And about everyone that didn’t show up. Thanks again to Waldo and Linda for a fun time. ***************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Jim Howard does a Fly-By to open the Balloon Bash Event
We had 16 of our BARF members complete the repairman inspection course last week. Congrats... Jim Stephenson from ASC came down and put on the course. We all passed and I think that everyone got something out of the class. Attendees pictured below, except for Scott and Kirk.
We also had several planes inspected this weekend. We figure that we have 35 planes "N" numbered now and around 35+ to go. Don't put off getting your plane transitioned. We will be having a couple of other opportunities to get your plane "N" numbered so stay tuned. All in all I think it was a very successful weekend.
